Special Moments from a special time abroad – 2024

Nursery Nurse - Darina K.

One of my best moments is the fact that I have realized one of my biggest dreams with the Care Professional year. It makes me incredibly happy and at the same time very proud. Apart from that, I am so grateful for the development I have experienced. Things don’t always go perfectly and this year here has allowed me to grow so much more as a person.

Then I’m so grateful for my host family, with whom I’ve had highs and lows, but everything is always harmonious and warm. In addition, this distance from my family in Germany has also taught me a lot more appreciation. I am so grateful that I have a family that I miss and that misses me, but I also know that they are always there for me without me having to be in the same country.

January 18, 2024 was a very special day because my host mum had her third child. So I get to experience the first 1 to 2 years of this little man.

One of my favorite moments was also on a snow day. The daycare center was closed that day and I spent the whole day with my two-year-old host child. I feel that our relationship got stronger since that day and I also went sledding with him. He had so much fun, I was so happy to experience this moment with him! I will never forget that day!

Occupational Therapist - Saskia H.

I started my APEX adventure in Boston, MA in 2022 and gonna finish it in November 2024 in Decatur, GA. And I have realized again how big the States are and that each State has their own culture.

Occupational Therapist - Loreena

I learn a lot about myself.

Dietitian - Sarah K.

I’ve learned that I can do things like traveling on my own. That I have matured as a person to a certain extent and have become more independent and self-confident. I have discovered new things for myself that I have never done before and hopefully will do in Germany and I have discovered a love of traveling and I can’t wait to see more of the world. And I hope I can stay in touch with some of the new friends I’ve made here and see them again when the time comes.

Educator & Social Worker - Clarissa G.

I learned that I will never be alone, no matter how far I am from home. No matter how complicated everything may seem, there is a reason for it. My start abroad was not easy, but I am still very happy to have not given up and to have fought for a better present. I have learned what really matters in life – health, friendship, and family. With this encouragement, I continue to reach for my dreams every day.

Physiotherapist - Sanne S.

Meeting so many amazing people along the way that I maybe would never have met back home. Even in some difficult situations, I made friends and lifelong memories. The road trips I went on I will (hopefully) never forget!

Sports Physical Therapist & Nutritionist - Theresa R.

During my time abroad, I discovered a newfound love for nature, embracing activities like diving and hiking. Engaging in sea turtle patrol as a volunteer not only heightened my environmental awareness but also instilled a sense of responsibility in protecting the ecosystems around me. This experience deepened my understanding of the environment and the importance of conservation efforts.

Occupational Therapist - Sara E.

My most special moment was seeing Hogwarts for the first time with my nine year old brother. It was magical and a dream come true.

Social Worker & Educator - Sophie L.

Getting out of my comfort zone and standing up for myself and my rights!

Physical Therapist B.Sc. - Marilyn H.

My most special day was Thanksgiving. I loved the time with the family and the feeling of giving and appreciation for everything we have that graced this day. I learned a lot about appreciation and living in the present moment from my special needs child too. And it´s funny because you also learn to appreciate more what you don´t have in the US but what you were used to in Germany.

I volunteered in an Alzheimer’s Respite with an amazing team of caregivers. When I am old, I want such lovely caregivers too.

I did my college credits in a Disney World Class. It was a lot of fun and I learned even more things about this other imagination-world that I would probably never have learned without my time here.

Social Worker - Julia G.

The most special moment in my time abroad was finally seeing the Northern Lights. We (my sister and I) went to Alaska with four other Au Pairs from Apex, which we never met before. But it was such a great fit and already on our second day we were able to see the Lights. It was just breathtaking and felt unreal. But being able to share this moment with so many other people you just met but became friends so fast, was incredible and something I will definitely never forget.

In my time abroad I learnt a lot about myself. I see myself in a whole new light. I know much better now what I want for my future and what I don’t want. It helped me to set my standards and limits. I feel safe to talk in another language and I know I really want to improve that even when I’m back in my home country. It just showed me who I am.

Elementary School Teacher - Lea H.

What was the most special moment about your time abroad?

A special moment for me was my birthday abroad. My host family planned a special trip to New York City during the magical holiday season in December. We started our day by exploring the bustling streets of the city, decorated with twinkling lights and festive decorations.

Our first stop was Rockefeller Center, where we marveled at the iconic Christmas tree towering over the skating rink below. Next, we made our way to Saks Fifth Avenue, where we were dazzled by the stunning light display on the building’s exterior.

The highlight of our day was watching the Rockettes perform at Radio City Music Hall. The precision of their dance routines and the grandeur of the stage left us in awe, and we couldn’t stop smiling throughout the entire show. It was a true highlight of my birthday celebration and a memory I will cherish forever.

As we said goodbye to the city and made our way back home, I reflected on the last couple of days with a full heart. My birthday in New York City during Christmas time was a dream come true, and I couldn’t have asked for a better way to celebrate another year of life.

Did you have the chance to do an internship or volunteer somewhere?

I had the amazing opportunity to participate in an internship at my host kid’s school, which was a truly rewarding experience for me. Working with my host kids allowed me to gain valuable insights into their academic progress, as well as their social and emotional well-being. I was able to provide personalized support and guidance to help them navigate any challenges they faced, fostering a strong bond and sense of trust between us. I learned so much from working with my host kids and the school community.

Speech Therapist - Hannah E.

The most special moment was when my host mum showed me the nomination paper she submitted as she nominated me for the „Care Professional of the Year“- Award! I literally started crying because the paper was written right from the bottom of her heart. More special was only the moment she told me that I won!!

Occupational Therapist - Marlene R.

The most special thing here is the feeling of freedom – work doesn‘t feel like work, more like spending time with Family. The chance to see so much of the country, to meet new people, to learn about the culture here every day.

Educator - Jana Sophia P.

I’ve been here for 5 months now and so much has happened that I often can’t believe it. In general, getting to know life here in the US, making new friends, going on trips, and of course settling in with your host family is so exciting and you experience something new every day. This year has already shaped me and helped me grow both personally and professionally and I am looking forward to everything that is yet to come.

I also did a photography class in NYC, which I can really recommend. Here you learn a lot about photography with great instructors and spend an exciting time with au pairs from all over the world in the incredible city of NYC.

Occupational Therapist - Alina G.

I did a fun travel class to NYC about photography and the history of the city. Even though I’m not super into photography, I really enjoyed the class and learned so much!

Probably the most special moment for me was the one time my host child had an appointment at the hospital and I went there with the parents. When the doctor came he introduced himself to me and said how much good stuff he heard about me and my work. That was such a big acknowledgment that I’m doing right.

Speech-Language Pathologist - Jillian L.

I learned so much about myself during this year abroad which I will be grateful for forever. I really do feel like I pushed myself a lot and did a huge amount of growing as a person.

Also, I am happy to have shared so many wholesome memories with my host family who supported me not only in my personal growth but also in my professional growth. Thank you!

Educator - Marie W.

I’m a very big American football fan and my favorite team is the New York Jets. One of my favorite memories was being able to go to one of their games with my host family and experience it from a VIP lounge.

Special Needs Care Provider - Katharina S.

My most special thing in my time abroad is the friendships I made here and the people I met. It is still unbelievable how close you can get in such a short amount of time. I’ll probably never forget the people I met here.

Occupational Therapist - Açelya K.

The most important thing is to find friends for life.

Pediatric Nurse - Aphrodite I.

The most special moment was me realizing that I’ve built a new life here with people that I love and don’t want to give up. Working and living with my host family taught me a lot about myself and helped me so much more becoming more mature.

I’ve learned to enjoy and appreciate every single day here in the US!

Social Worker - Ann-Sophie H.

The most special thing for me about my time abroad, apart from all the wonderful and special trips, is my relationship with my host family. I came here primarily to work and travel and now I have gained friends and a family.

My travels were also special for me, such as New York at Christmas time, where we took a helicopter flight, among other nice things, or my class in Texas, where I got an insight into the ranch and cowboy life.

Speech Therapist - Veronika E.

The most special moment abroad was for me traveling alone in the USA. To trust in myself and have the confidence to do it by myself.

I learn many things about autism here. I learned to enjoy the little moments in life and that it is okay to just sit somewhere, and live in the moment. That was one of the things my host child taught me.

I was doing the ACIP-Plan and also volunteering at the school of my host child. To see how well he is doing in school made my day!

I will do a class in NYC about Art and Performance. Traveling and seeing different places will be a big part of my time here.

Right now I’m thinking of a study class to become an RBT.

Occupational Therapist - Sarah Diana S.

Leaving my comfort zone every day, working abroad, traveling, and getting to know a new culture while living with a host family has helped me develop both personally and professionally.

Educator - Carina R.

I find it very special to come to a family as a ’stranger‘ and be accepted as a member straight away.

The contacts and friendships that develop here are also special for me. Such wonderful connections are made and I very much hope that these will last long after the year abroad.

Occupational Therapist - Pia B.

I had a lot of different special moments! One moment was, when my host parents took me to NYC after Thanksgiving and I was able to see my friend Rabea, who is a friend from Germany and also an Au Pair with Apex, but also little things like spending time with the new friends I found and going on road trips with my Host family.

I learned a lot about myself since I have been here, like thinking outside the box, being my unapologetic self, and that anything is possible and no dream too big! Who would’ve thought that pushing yourself out of your comfort zone over and over again is actually really the only way to growth? (Everyone, always, but I guess everyone was always right about that.)

I am lucky to be a volunteer at Step VA. In the project I am volunteering at kids with all kinds of special needs are able to be part of a musical, learning choreographies, song lyrics, and being part of a team. This year’s musical is „Seussical“, with characters from the Dr. Seuss universe.

I am also a student at the University of Mary Washington, taking a general Psychology class and a Sociology class about social issues. I am enjoying learning from both and enjoying being part of the University Community!

Occupational Therapist - Jasmin W.

The Christmas celebration I had with my family and their families while being fully included after only being with the family for 3 days. The love I received and the fun I had is worth more than anything.

Teacher - Megan R.

My time traveling with my host family has been the best time of my life!

Special Needs Care Provider - Laura M.

Seeing my host child smiling makes me happy and everything worth it. I‘m able to get to know ABA therapy what I‘m thankful for.

Occupational Therapist - Darleen H.

My most special moment was the first time my host child came to me to cuddle and her big smile afterward. The first couple of months were really difficult because my host child was really aggressive with me. But that moment was so special to me! Since then it has gotten better and better. It showed me that I was doing a good job and that it was worth it to „fight“ for a better relationship.

Social Worker - Dina K.

Working with special needs children made me appreciate the small things in life. Helping my Host Child Ilan achieve big milestones like potty training and swallowing pills are definitely special moments I will never forget. Working and living in a family system is a unique and new experience and I am learning a lot about myself and others.

Being new in an area, making new friends, and trying out new things also made my mindset grow. I think the friendships you make abroad are more intense.

Physiotherapist - Josephine L.

I had a lot of special moments while traveling and exploring the United States. I can’t really decide which one of them was the best. I think one of the special moments was spending the first time in NYC and seeing Times Square in real life. Also always special moments are when my host child is laughing and looks so happy. That smile and laughing is the most heartwarming thing I know. 💕

Educator - Tim H.

I learned to stay focused and be disciplined. When you have the point, when you do not want to go on the next adventure, be open and JUST DO It. A phrase I used to say to my 13-year-old Host Child. Do not argue, just do it. I did a great college class in New Jersey – Lesson: Photography and to get the chance to work with expensive equipment, try new ways of photography, etc was really special and made most of the time a bunch of fun. To be honest, the Post-assignments took more time than the Pre-Assignments. But whatever: 100/100.

Occupational Therapist - Johanna R.

Too many special moments! An Ohio state basketball game with friends and my oldest host child. That was a bonding moment for me and him and my friends. To fly alone on my first vacation to a city I’d never been before. Make American friends and of course Au-pair friends! Multicultural New Year’s Eve. To see my host child reach the goals that I set!

Physical Therapist - Julia F.

I had the chance to try and learn a lot of new things, for example, sports like bouldering, I discovered ballet again, enjoyed hiking more with all the beautiful National parks, started to crochet my own clothes, and learned sign language.

With my art college class, I even got the chance to be part of an art show at the college!

I also did some volunteering at a physical therapy clinic and at a hippo therapy institute which was really fun!

For my credits I also did a Texas Au pair class, it was not what I expected but we made the best out of it, am I right Phine?

Educator - Beyza D.

My most special moment was definitely a trip to Grand Canyon. It was always my dream and it was a very emotional moment when I was there !!!

One of my highlights of the year Is definitely meeting my best friend for life. I met Sophia because of APEX and I am so grateful for that!

I will always be grateful for my second family for life! I have a very beautiful relationship with my host family and I am so thankful for that.

Physical Therapist - Lena K.

I learned very much of my self! I learned to love my life!

Occupational Therapist - Alexandra N.

I did the travel class on Hawaii, it was just amazing. You decently have to visit Hawaii!

Special Needs Care Provider - Lara G.

The most special thing about my time abroad was, and still is, that I learned so many new things about myself and that I will probably go back as a person with a whole new personality! I made new friends in different States, I tried a lot of new food and I had the chance to travel to a lot of places in the „short“ time I’ve been here.

Special Needs Care Provider - Anna F.

I did the weekend class at Disney World. That was a great experience.

Occupational Therapist - Rika Marie B.

I had a great time at my weekend class in Texas. I danced line dance and sat on a longhorn. I was allowed to experience the life of a Cowboy. This experience was one of the best I´ve had so far.

Another super nice experience was the visit with my host family to Disneyworld in Florida. A dream came true. I´m a very big Disney fan and was therefore very happy to be able to go with them. I saw a lot of characters and made a little trip around the world through the movies. I definitely want to go there again.

Occupational Therapist - Rebecca D.

There are so many great moments, I couldn’t decide which one is the most beautiful. I think the most beautiful thing is that I met so many new friends here and we just experienced so much together. For example, I was in Seattle with a friend for a class for a weekend. It was a long journey, but it was super fun. For me, especially the Halloween time was something totally new. All the decorated crazy houses and the spit houses were impressive. I have learned so many new things about myself. For example, to be self-employed. How it is difficult to solve a situation with children. But also professionally I was able to learn so many new things and use them in everyday life. Since Occupational therapy in particular relies very much on the everyday reference.

Physical Therapist - Katharina P.

All moments with my friends and spending fun time with my host family.

Educator - Laura H.

Bonding with my host family and my host kid, and thereby found my second family on the other side of the world. Not only finding friends to travel, finding friends for the rest of the life.

I did an awesome astronomy class with really cool guys which turned into good friends later on.

Special Needs Care Provider - Julia T.

I have the opportunity to work with a lot of awesome nurses in our home. I also get the chance to be part of all kinds of therapy and doctor visits. It was very special for me to see how a G/J Tube change happens for the first time.

Occupational Therapist - Jasmin A.

I love to witness every little bit of the process my host child makes. The most special moment for me so far was when my nonverbal host child with autism first wanted a hug and didn’t stop cuddling me for at least 10 minutes! It felt so special!

I’m working with three different therapists and this interdisciplinary work is amazing and helping so much with my host child’s progress! It’s the best type of work in my opinion!

Still have a lot of time ahead of me here in Seattle and I’m very much looking forward for everything that’ll come up!

Social Worker - Maike B.

Unfortunately, I’ve only been there for about two weeks, so I can’t tell too much yet. I think the possibility of overlapping with the other Care Professionals is very valuable. In this way, you can pay a lot of attention to the way they interact with the children and discuss how to build a successful relationship.

I’ve also had a few volunteer hours with her in a bakery where children were allowed to try their hand at decorating donuts. They had a lot
fun with it.

The best moment was when my host father’s dad said to me „It’s nice that you’re in our family. Welcome!“

Educator - Angelina B.

Every moment is special. I love to see the growth, learning, and discovery of my host children. Going abroad allows me to see what I have been carrying inside of me all along. Through the life I am facing now, I am feeling my own growth and self-discovery every day. I would never give up this life. Big or small, I am grateful for every moment.

Occupational Therapist - Jan H.

For me, the most important thing is and was to see the vastness of the country with my own eyes. During my road trip, I was able to experience and see a wide variety of landscapes in a very short space of time.

Occupational Therapist - Emely R.

I learned a lot about different therapies and how the therapists all work together. My two Ölpest host kids have Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech therapy, and Group therapy. I volunteer at the group therapy which is super interesting. My host kids are the happiest kids I’ve ever met. I go to bed with a smile every day because of them.

Occupational Therapist - Celine F.

My most special moment was after a 7-hour drive to Lake Tahoe, sitting at a viewpoint in the sun and looking over this beautiful lake thinking: I made it!

After a car crash and quite hard rematch, I learned to never give up & accept that things happen for a reason. It made me grow a lot as a person.

Occupational Therapist - Selina R.

I volunteer in a cat shelter and once a month they offer cat yoga. That is one of my favorite experiences so far.

Educator - Lea J.

My favorite part about my year abroad is meeting so many amazing people and exploring new places.

Social Worker - Leon S.

I’ve been able to learn a lot about myself so far. I have become significantly more relaxed and patient. I also gained spontaneity as a new quality.

Completing the AICP also helps me to take a new perspective on children’s behavior.

I am currently attending a college course to consolidate and improve my English language skills.

Occupational Therapist - Syreen G.

There are so many special memories I‘ve made here. I really enjoyed spending holidays with my host family, like New Year’s and Christmas,. Also I‘ve explored so much of NYC. As a foodie, I get excited about all those amazing restaurants and cafes.

Special Needs Care Provider - Madita R.

I was able to learn a lot about myself. I was able to expand my experience of working with young children.

I was also able to help my host child to develop and make progress.

My favorite moment is and was the appreciation of my host family.

Also, the cuddling, laughing, and singing with my host children.

Physical Therapist - Jannik H.

After just a short time, I was able to gain a lot of experience, both on a personal and interpersonal level, as well as about this huge diverse country and its culture.

I’m also very excited to see what else is waiting for me, what challenges I can overcome and what beautiful moments will surprise me.

Nurse - Joy A.

I really can’t pinpoint one particular moment. There were many moments when I was simply grateful from the bottom of my heart that I was able to experience all of this. It was a special moment for me every time I saw, tried, learned, did something new, or got out of my comfort zone.

I can remember moments together with my host family for example when we were in Florida at Christmas time or when I went on trips with my friends and we discovered new things together. These moments are priceless. It was mainly through these moments that I learned that it is so important to try new things and that you learn the most in those moments when you are on your own.

Together with Leonie, I offered a Winter Autism Camp which was very well received and we were able to get creative and exchange ideas with the parents. I also took part in a photography class in New York from Thursday to Sunday we learned a lot about photography and also so much about New York and were allowed to take photos at various spots in New York.

Educator - Nathalie M.

I learned so many things for my future jobs and got the opportunity to learn a lot about different therapies for kids with special needs. I also met some of my best friends here in the US and I am so thankful for that!

Special Needs Care Provider - Franziska W.

I learned how to travel low budget and in a short period of time. With only my backpack, friends or alone, a weekend trip to a new city or a road-trip to see national parks. With small tricks and some experience you can travel almost everywhere.

Occupational Therapist - Michelle D.

Volunteering at the Reverse Rett Gala at the Beverly Wiltshire in Los Angeles was an amazing volunteering opportunity! Seeing all those people supporting the cause and caring.

Pediatric Nurse - Linda M.

I learned new things about myself, got out of my comfort zone, and tried new things!

Found friends for life and experienced a lot of different feelings and emotions in just a short time but realized what is really important in life!!

Occupational Therapist - Yasmin K.

All the incredible travels I did.

Educator - Anne Katrin K.

The first “I love you” from my Host kids.

I loved being able to learn how to snowboard and will definitely continue doing so when I am back in Germany. My favorite thing was volunteering in a wolf sanctuary and learning about these fascinating animals and how they impact the world around them.

Occupational Therapist - Veronica L.

During my year abroad in the USA, I had the incredible opportunity to explore breathtaking destinations across the country, each leaving a lasting impression. Immersing myself in the vibrant culture of Hawaii, trying surfing, and indulging in local cuisine were highlights of my journey. Meeting wonderful people along the way, from my host family to friendly locals, enriched my experience. It was a transformative journey of self-discovery and adventure that I will always treasure.

Educator - Juliana B.

I’ve met a lot of great people through Apex, which I’m very grateful for!

I’ve learned that it is okay to be sad or to cry! Nobody is perfect (like one of my favourite board games haha). I would never have had such profound conversations with some people if I hadn’t shown my vulnerable side.

And the most important thing for future CPs: Don’t be afraid to ask!

Occupational Therapist - Sonja K.

I´ve learned a lot over my year abroad. I´ve learned to be brave. I´ve learned to be patient. I´ve learned to listen more to my body and I´ve learned more about my boundaries. But the most important point where I´ve grown is, how I want to spend my time when I´m back in Germany. What´s really important to me. Especially how important my family, my friends, and my boyfriend in Germany are to me. And that I need to put more effort into quality time with them.

One of the most special moments for me in the U.S. was sitting at the Zion National Park. Sitting on top of the wide and big valley, feeling how small I am compared to the world. I didn’t feel any worries in that moment, I just felt free and blessed.

Special Moments from a special time abroad – 2024
