Hey, in New York hätte ich fast meine Tasche mit meinem Reisepass verloren. Eine Freundin von mir hatte sie Gott sei Dank dann wieder gefunden. Das ist eine Geschichte, die ich auch nie vergessen werde.

When you have the Gran Canyon, Arizona, and Utah in mind you think about a desert, cactus, and extremely hot temperature…Well, that doesn’t count for the whole year, which I had to learn when I was there for my road trip in March. It was freezing cold and we were not prepared for driving through a ski resort, seeing nothing of the wide vast Grand Canyon because of too much fog, or waking up in the morning to find our car covered in snow and ice…

As a person who enjoys walking and dislikes driving I was committed to going to places without my car – that was in my first week on Long Island. Google Maps told me Target is a 33-minute walk away. So I walked for 30min only to realize that for those last 3min, I‘d have to cross the highway. It had 6 lanes. And no traffic lights for pedestrians. And a lot of speeding cars. I was humbled and walked another 30 minutes back. So, a car is a non-negotiable here. I learned that the hard way.

I recently went to a Korean spa and decided to try the sheep’s ears towels that you see in K-dramas! 😄After watching a YouTube tutorial on how to fold the towel, it took me about 10 minutes to get the hang of it and prevent the ears from disintegrating. But in the end, I did it! And guess what? People actually caught me folding the towel and talking to myself in German! And, of course, I took a picture as proof!
Sometimes I catch myself switching between German and English without even realizing it. I’ll talk to my friends in English, even though they don’t understand it, and then switch to German with my host family, even though they don’t speak it either. Just because my brain is in the wrong language section! It can be so confusing! Do you ever feel the same way?

If you want to make a banana bread, then you have to read the recipe very good. When not you see, „Oh no we don´t have enough flour“ and you jump into the car and drive to the grocery store and buy flour. After that, you drive home and see again, „Oh no we have no sugar too“. So, you have to drive again, but this time to another store because the other one is closed now. But of course when you bake the bread at 11 pm. But the stress was for a good thing because the banana bread was delicious.

Not yet, because I really haven’t been here that long but a message for my best friend!

Love you so much.

I spent a long time talking to my host family about units of measurement. It was mainly about the metric system and temperature units.
It is and remains a fun discussion point that I always joke about with my host family. 🙂
