There were many but I sadly can’t tell the whole story to them but we’re talking in kind of three languages English, Spanish and some German words so it’s always kind of a funny conversation cause we end up mixing any language in one sentence .

I think when I first got to the US my English was okay but wasn’t as good yet. My 6 year old hostchild always let me know if I said something wrong or pronounced something weird. At some point I probably pronounced the word „sip“ wrong the 15th time or something like that (over a couple weeks). My hostchild looked at me and said „NATHALIE it’s not zip it is SIIIIIIIIIP“. I had to laugh so hard!! After that I never pronounced it wrong again so the good thing was I finally learned it hahah!

Also my host kids loved using Snapchat filters and we had so many funny situations using that!

When Jos and I where driving home, I turned on his seat heating and he wondered why it’s so hot at his ass. It took a while for him to realise what’s happening and I laughed really hard.

When you get upset with your friends and you talk in German, and suddenly people from America understand German and talk to you.

Mostly how I pronounce words, because we learned British English in school. Makes the people laugh around here sometimes. 😂

We (CPs from Cbus) went to a restaurant and just ordered pie for dessert. The waitress came and gave us the checks and I asked if I could pay with Apple Pay, she said yes, we started talking that it’s more common to pay with your phone in America than in Germany. Aileen said „no that’s not true, I think that’s very common in Germany too“ Magdalena and I first though we’re too long in America and we just don’t know but then Aileen said again „my grandma has the best recipes for apple pie“ we were confused for a second and then started laughing because Aileen were so serious about it and didn’t realize we are talking about pay methods. 😂

Magdalena - Occupational Therapist

That some Americans know the word „Earworm“ and playing euchre.

On of my funny stories is, I was with a very good friend in New York for a maple syrup festival. The festival was up north and in the middle of nowhere. Everything looks like we are in the movie “Frozen” because we had a very bad snowstorm that night before! So we went with the car to all the farms and got some maple syrup to try and they told us everything how they get the syrup. At one farm there were animals too. I was like a rescue station for them. So now to the funny thing. Like I said it looks like the movie “Frozen” and in the German version of Frozen 2, Olaf is looking for his friends and called their names. On of the names are Hildegard. But he doesn’t even know a Hildegard. But now folks I found Hildegard and she is so pretty and cute. 🐰

That’s my funny moment because I love Disney movies and at this time I was part of it!! 😂

Oh and we went sliding with no snow pants because we was not thinking about that 🙈

Rachel - Speech Therapist

Chicago, IL

To be honest, I love all the clichés you run into here. It’s just too funny. Whether I’m in a bar and someone asks me if I know Hitler, what my favorite car is, if I “speak European,” if there’s music in Germany, or my personal favorite tbh, questions about Oktoberfest. Never been there but sure it’s great.

One of the funniest moments happened when my fiancé and me visited the Salvation Mountain in California. The area was a bit… special and not very safe. I changed in the backseat of the car, and suddenly a man shouted, “We’re not open yet!” I replied, “I know, we’re just waiting here.” My fiancé asked what he said, and he jokingly said, “Watch out, here come the dogs!” A few minutes later, I stepped out of the car to show him my outfit, and suddenly two purebred pit bulls came charging toward me. I’ve never jumped into a car so quickly in my life—my heart almost stopped! But turns out, they were just running past our car—they were wild dogs, not even anyone’s pets. What a coincidence!

Before my boyfriend came to visit me in the U.S., we planned a trip to Las Vegas. Little did I know, he was going to propose to me on Christmas morning! When my family and friends saw our Las Vegas photos on Instagram, many jokingly asked if we had run off and gotten drunk and married like in the movies! That definitely gave us a good laugh!

This funny story was actually pretty terrible but luckily we can laugh about it today and it is a story we will never forget. It started with a trip to New Orleans which was beautiful in itself, but even there people were going crazy because the day after we left there was going to be a snowstorm (which is very unusual in New Orleans as it never snows there normally). Of course we made fun of it a bit as for people who grew up with snow it’s not a big tragedy but anyway we went to the airport and made it to Houston (our layover) without any problems only to our misfortune there was the same problem as in New Orleans. There was supposed to be snow which never happens here either. Completely clueless, we make our way to our gate, already sitting in the plane until at some point the announcement comes that 29 planes are waiting to take off and we might not make it because of the curfew. At some point the pilot said he would let us off now as there was no chance of us taking off today. Of course first a shock and try to rebook, book a hotel for the night (where I booked a hotel at a completely different airport in the rush, so book one again at this airport) to then hear that we have to stay in the airport, because the security closes and we couldn’t come back should a plane leave. The end result was that we were put up on cots with airplane blankets where we ended up spending two nights, because the airport was completely closed due to the “snowstorm” and we couldn’t leave the airport because they also closed the highway and no one was driving. We spent the two days eating pizza, Subway and Starbucks because those were the only stores that were open as we were the only 108 passengers in the whole airport. After two days without a shower, proper food, little sleep and what felt like a thousand flight changes, the airport reopened and we had a flight from Houston to San Francisco at 6pm, but as we were on standby for a 12pm flight we had hoped to get a seat and lucky as we were my two friends and I got a seat, now we could finally go home, we thought and joked that we were only safe when we were in the air …. Once again, we were already on the plane and started driving. As the plane speeds up for take-off, the whole plane starts to shake. A bad joke, isn’t it? but no, we have to be brought back to the gate because of a technical defect, they don’t know what will happen next. After all we were finally transferred to another plane and left the airport at 5pm (almost at the time of the original flight). We couldn’t believe it when we really landed in San Francisco. In the end, it’s a story we can laugh about and will tell for a long time and we met two cool women from Canada and Australia with whom we spent the whole days at the airport and somehow had an unforgettable time. And yet, I don´t need this to happen again 🙂

In addition to many very funny moments with my host family and the kids, I just have so many enjoyable and funny moments with the girls I’ve met here! Some of the funniest moments we had together were in Nashville, TN and in the Mammoth Cave National Park, KY. For example, we have created seek-and-find pictures – can you find all six of us in the photos?

Eve - Occupational Therapist

San José, CA

After our long and nice weekend in New Orleans we stranded 2 days and nights at the airport in Houston/ Texas because there was a winter storm in Texas and the whole airport shut down. So we had to sleep 2 nights at the airport, directly at the Terminal because everything was closed – also TSA. So instead of 4 travel days we had 6 travel days but 2 of them at the airport in Houston… Does that count as a visit?!? 😉

Shock moment is still the sizes of the drinks (and too much ice) 🥶
